  • Women’s Royal Air Force fully merged into Royal Air Force.
  • The Channel Tunnel, a 51 km (32 mi) long rail tunnel beneath the English Channel at the Strait of Dover, officially opened.

Entertainment

  • Release of Scottish group Wet Wet Wet’s cover of the song Love Is All Around (1967), as featured in Four Weddings and a Funeral. From 29 May it will spend 15 consecutive weeks at number one in the UK Singles Chart, the longest spell ever attained by a British act.
  • Jonathan Dimbleby’s film on Charles, Prince of Wales, Charles: The Private Man, the Public Role is broadcast on ITV.
  • 10 November – BBC1 broadcasts the first episode of sitcom The Vicar of Dibley.

Music

  • The first number one single of the year was the 700th since charts began, a reggae version of “Twist and Shout” by Chaka Demus & Pliers.
  • Manchester rockers Oasis found their success on their debut album, Definitely Maybe, which shot to number No. 1 on its first week out in September.
  • A record was broken in 1994 for the longest song to become a UK top 10 hit when Bon Jovi released the single “Dry County” in March, when it peaked at #9. The song was 9 minutes and 52 seconds long.
